Saskatchewan Government Allocates $28.5 Million for Classrooms
The Government of Saskatchewan has announced a significant investment of $28.5 million for the 2025-26 Relocatable Classroom Program, aimed at addressing the growing need for educational space. This funding will support the addition of 39 new relocatable classrooms and the relocation of two existing classrooms to various schools across the province.
Everett Hindley, the Education Minister, emphasized the importance of this initiative in a media release. “The Relocatable Classroom Program helps us address space pressures by adding classrooms where they are needed most,” he stated. This program is designed to respond to increasing enrolment numbers and provides school divisions with the flexibility necessary to manage local educational demands effectively.
Classroom Locations and Implementation Timeline
The new classrooms will be distributed to schools in cities and towns including Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Blaine Lake, Clavet, Corman Park, Humboldt, Lanigan, and Swift Current. Installation is scheduled for the upcoming summer, with the aim of having the classrooms ready for students by the start of the 2026-27 school year.
While Minister Hindley was unavailable for further comments, the ministry provided a statement outlining the program’s key functions. “The Relocatable Classroom Program is designed to address immediate needs for additional classroom space to accommodate increases in enrolments,” the statement noted. It also mentioned that school divisions apply for these relocatable classrooms, with requests prioritized based on projected enrolment figures.
Program Benefits and Future Commitments
The government views relocatable classrooms as a timely and effective solution to manage enrolment pressures while ensuring quality learning environments. These structures can be relocated to different schools as enrolment needs fluctuate, offering an adaptable approach to educational infrastructure.
According to the ministry’s statement, school divisions have the option to construct their relocatable classrooms on-site or purchase pre-fabricated units from external vendors. Importantly, these classrooms must adhere to the same building codes and standards as permanent structures, ensuring safety and quality.
Since the program’s inception in the 2013-14 fiscal year, the Saskatchewan Government has committed a total of $234 million to enhance classroom availability through the Relocatable Classroom Program. This ongoing investment underscores the government’s commitment to improving educational facilities and accommodating the needs of a growing student population.
