Sidney/North Saanich RCMP Alert Residents to Asphalt Paving Scam
Residents in the Sidney and North Saanich areas have been warned about a potential scam involving door-to-door asphalt paving services. On March 7, 2024, local police received a report from a homeowner who had encountered a crew offering to pave his driveway using leftover materials from a previous project.
According to Const. Benje Bartley, the media spokesperson for the Sidney/North Saanich RCMP, the crew consisted of approximately eight individuals who began work on the driveway. However, the resident grew suspicious when he observed that the asphalt presented by the workers seemed to lack the necessary oil and tar, raising concerns that it might be recycled material.
When confronted about the quality of the asphalt, the crew swiftly packed up their tools and left without completing the job. This incident has prompted a thorough investigation by the RCMP.
Public Caution Advised
The Sidney/North Saanich RCMP have emphasized the importance of vigilance regarding potential scams, urging residents to report any suspicious activity immediately. Const. Bartley stated, “Sidney/North Saanich RCMP would like to caution the public about this suspected scam.”
Earlier in the week, similar incidents were reported in Sooke, where two seniors were approached by individuals claiming to sell discounted asphalt services. These occurrences highlight a troubling trend of door-to-door scams targeting vulnerable members of the community.
Residents are encouraged to verify the credentials of any contractors before agreeing to services, especially those offered at unusually low prices. The police advise homeowners to seek multiple quotes and to ensure that any materials used are of high quality.
As investigations continue, the RCMP is dedicated to preventing further incidents and ensuring community safety. Anyone with information related to these scams is urged to contact their local police department. The safety and well-being of residents remain a top priority for law enforcement in the area.
