Salt Spring Island Residents Invited to Share Views on Transit Fares
Residents of Salt Spring Island are being asked to provide their opinions on a proposed increase in public transit fares after more than a decade without any changes. BC Transit is considering adjustments to the fare structure, which has remained at $2.25 since a raise in 2012. The service was first established in 2008 with a fare of $2.
The transportation authority is exploring three options for fare adjustments and seeks input from the community regarding which plan would be most acceptable. The first option proposes a gradual increase in fares that aligns with inflation rates. The second option suggests an immediate fare increase that would also be based on inflation metrics. The third option would raise individual fares to $2.75 while reducing the cost of monthly passes compared to the other two proposals.
To facilitate community feedback, BC Transit has launched a survey on its website. Additionally, an open house will be held on January 23 from 12:00 to 15:00 at the Rainbow Recreation Centre, located at 262 Rainbow Road. This event will allow residents to discuss the proposed changes and express their preferences directly to transit officials.
BC Transit recently implemented fare increases in other regions, including Victoria, Nanaimo, Comox Valley, and Cowichan Valley. The feedback gathered during this consultation process will play a crucial role in determining the future of transit fares on Salt Spring Island. Residents are encouraged to participate and make their voices heard regarding this important issue.
