River Heights School Enhances Security After Antisemitic Vandalism
An elementary school in River Heights, which operates the only Hebrew immersion program in the province, is ramping up security measures following a series of antisemitic vandalism incidents. The school, Brock Corydon School, is taking proactive steps to reassure families that student safety remains a top priority in the wake of these troubling events.
In a letter to parents on January 3, 2024, principal Lars Sigurdson and vice-principal Richard Hechter confirmed that they are maintaining regular communication with the Winnipeg Police Service. They are implementing heightened security protocols to protect students and staff. “We are aware of the recent incidents at Kelvin High School and Shaarey Zedek, and we understand that these events may cause concern,” the letter stated. “Please know that the safety and well-being of our students remain our highest priority.”
Brock Corydon School emphasized its commitment to safety by adhering to established security protocols. These include keeping all exterior doors locked, monitoring entry points, and conducting regular checks on safety equipment and emergency plans. The administration encouraged the school community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to authorities.
The email from school officials followed a disturbing incident where Kelvin High School was targeted with antisemitic graffiti. Earlier that same week, Shaarey Zedek synagogue was also defaced with similar imagery. The Winnipeg Police force is treating these acts as hate crimes. Reports indicate that a swastika was spray-painted on the high school, while the vandalism at Shaarey Zedek included two swastikas and the word “hate,” discovered early on January 2, 2024.
Adding to the wave of hate-fueled incidents, Habibiz Café, a Palestinian-owned restaurant, was vandalized with its front windows smashed. A note left at the scene contained a threatening message directed at the establishment. Authorities are investigating this incident as well.
Winnipeg School Division superintendent Matt Henderson addressed the community in a letter, reiterating the importance of vigilance in light of these events. “We must work together to ensure a safe environment for all students and families,” he stated.
The recent surge in antisemitic vandalism has raised significant concerns among community members. As schools and places of worship are increasingly targeted, the emphasis on security and community vigilance becomes ever more crucial.
As authorities continue to investigate the incidents, schools like Brock Corydon are taking steps to create a safe and supportive environment for all students. The collaboration between educational institutions and law enforcement highlights the community’s resolve to combat hate and ensure safety for everyone.
