Regina Readers Embrace Books as Popularity Surges in 2025
Reading remains a vibrant pastime in Regina, Saskatchewan, as evidenced by the continued popularity of local libraries and bookstores. The Regina Public Library (RPL) reports a significant increase in borrowing activity, particularly in light of recent adaptations of popular literature into television series. This trend highlights a robust demand for books among residents of the Queen City.
Surge in Popularity for Local Literature
According to Geoffrey Allen, the RPL’s director of collections, the library continues to draw visitors eager to explore its extensive catalogue. One title that has captured the public’s attention is Heated Rivalry, authored by Canadian writer Rachel Reid. Since being adapted into a television series that premiered in late November 2025, this romance story about two hockey rivals has become a bestseller. Allen noted, “We’re excited to get all the books here; I think six in the series already have been published. They’re a little hard to come by. I think the television series has just blown up their popularity.”
This heightened interest has led to challenges in maintaining supply. “We’re having trouble getting enough copies into the library right now to meet demand,” Allen added. “But we’re trying really hard to do that because we know that people really want to read it.”
Youth Engagement and Literary Trends
The enthusiasm for reading is not limited to new releases. Christine Scott, co-owner of the used bookstore Centennial Books, emphasized the enduring love of literature among Regina’s residents. “It’s a way to recharge. It’s a way to learn,” she said. Scott noted that younger generations are particularly engaged, recalling the surge in popularity of young adult literature with series like The Hunger Games and Twilight. “We all saw that with the explosion of Y-A Lit, but everybody reads those, and it’s a huge thing.”
The Regina Public Library’s borrowing statistics reflect this trend. Among the top five most borrowed books in 2025, the prequel to The Hunger Games, titled Sunrise on the Reaping, ranked fourth, while the third book in Rebecca Yarros’ Fourth Wing series, Onyx Storm, claimed the second spot. These figures indicate a consistent interest in both new and established franchises, highlighting the diverse reading preferences of the community.
As Allen noted, literature provides an escape for many. “People are always looking for an escape. You could open up a whole new world,” he explained. Books allow readers to explore different genres, from fantasy to mystery, enriching their understanding and appreciation of varied narratives. This trend of returning to books, both in physical and digital formats, showcases a vibrant literary culture in Regina that continues to thrive.
In summary, the Regina Public Library and local bookstores are witnessing a resurgence in reading interest, driven largely by adaptations and an enthusiastic readership. As demand grows, both institutions are committed to meeting the needs of the community, fostering a love for literature that spans generations.
