Pictou County Woman Transforms Candle-Making Hobby into Thriving Business
Sierra Fraser, a resident of Pictou County, Nova Scotia, has turned her passion for candle-making into a successful small business. What began as a creative outlet in 2024 to alleviate anxiety has blossomed into her brand, Fraser’s Flames, where she crafts and sells soy candles and wax melts. Fraser’s journey reflects a blend of creativity and entrepreneurship, allowing her to share her love for candle-making while financing her hobby.
Fraser describes her initial motivation as a need to express her creativity. As a child, she enjoyed writing stories and performing plays, and she continues to seek artistic outlets. “Selling them felt like the perfect way to share what I love with others, and it also helped fund my growing hobby,” she shares. With this mindset, she quickly found herself with more candles than she could use, prompting the decision to sell them.
From Hobbyist to Entrepreneur
Fraser initially experimented with candle-making without any formal guidance. She honed her skills through online resources, particularly YouTube, and learned through practice. As her knowledge expanded, she began to identify popular scents and designs, which often reflect her life experiences. One standout fragrance, named “Gram’s House,” evokes nostalgia for many customers, reminiscent of freshly baked goods and childhood memories. “It smells wonderful and has a story people can relate to,” Fraser explains.
Each candle she creates has a personal connection. For instance, her Gothic Romance candle was inspired by a visit to Casa Loma in Toronto, which she later linked to a gothic romance film. Through these creations, Fraser aims to encapsulate feelings associated with different seasons and moods, making every product meaningful.
While Fraser enjoys the creative process, she acknowledges the challenges of entrepreneurship, particularly the vulnerability of sharing her work with others. The positive feedback she receives, however, has encouraged her. Each candle carries a narrative, with some even traveling to notable locations; her P.E.I. candle was photographed alongside a giant potato during a trip to Prince Edward Island.
Future Aspirations and Community Engagement
Fraser envisions expanding her product line with larger, intricately designed candles that tell their own stories through embedded shapes and scenes. This ambition reflects her ongoing commitment to creativity and craftsmanship. Beyond her candle-making endeavors, she is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in psychology and studying digital marketing, hoping to integrate these skills into her business.
“Selling my candles has been a fun and exciting way to explore my creativity, earn a little extra during school to support my hobby, and learn new skills that I hope will help me in a future career,” she notes.
Fraser’s Flames products are available at local markets across Pictou County, where customers can explore her latest creations. For those interested in her offerings, updates and product information can be found on her social media platforms, including Facebook and Instagram under the handle @frasersflames_. Through her journey, Sierra Fraser not only expresses her creativity but also connects with her community, making her candle-making venture a warm and engaging part of Pictou County’s local business landscape.
