Physicist Explains Spectacular Blood Moon Over Southern Ontario
The recent full blood moon, known as the “Worm Moon,” captivated viewers across southern Ontario on March 7, 2023. In an interview with CBC News, Dr. Jennifer Orbax, a lecturer in the Department of Physics, provided insights into this celestial phenomenon and its significance.
During the event, the moon took on a striking reddish hue, a characteristic feature of blood moons. Dr. Orbax explained that this coloration occurs due to the Earth’s atmosphere filtering sunlight. “As sunlight passes through our atmosphere, shorter wavelengths scatter more, allowing the longer red wavelengths to dominate,” she noted.
The Worm Moon is named for the time of year when earthworms emerge from the ground, signaling the arrival of spring. This particular full moon is not only a beautiful sight but also holds cultural significance across various communities. Dr. Orbax emphasized that these lunar events serve as reminders of the intricate connections between celestial bodies and life on Earth.
In her discussion, Dr. Orbax encouraged people to take the opportunity to observe such phenomena. “It’s important to look up and appreciate the universe around us,” she said. She highlighted that lunar events are accessible to everyone, requiring no special equipment—just clear skies and a willingness to gaze upwards.
The Blood Moon has gained popularity in recent years, drawing attention from both astronomers and the general public. The rare occurrence invites enthusiasts to engage with astronomy, often leading to community gatherings and shared experiences. Dr. Orbax expressed hope that such events inspire curiosity about science and the natural world.
With the next blood moon anticipated later this year, skywatchers are encouraged to mark their calendars. The convergence of science and natural beauty offers a unique opportunity for individuals to connect with both the cosmos and their local communities. Observing these celestial events can foster a sense of wonder and appreciation for the universe’s mysteries.
