Ontario Introduces Enhanced Curriculum for Kindergarten Students
Ontario is set to implement a more rigorous kindergarten curriculum beginning in September 2024. The new framework aims to enhance the focus on literacy and mathematics instruction for young learners. According to Mario Spagnuolo, President of the Greater Essex Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO), the changes represent a significant shift in educational priorities for kindergarten students.
“It’s more explicit instruction for literacy and mathematics,” Spagnuolo explained in an interview with CTV News. The updated curriculum will require kindergarten teachers to evaluate students based on specific performance metrics.
Raquel Roberts, a superintendent with the Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB), detailed the practical implications of the curriculum changes. “Our kindergartens will be exploring, counting, and estimating up to 20. They’ll be doing addition and subtraction up to 10,” Roberts stated. Despite the increased emphasis on academic skills, both Spagnuolo and Roberts emphasized that the play-based environment of kindergarten classrooms will remain intact.
“We want them to play,” Roberts noted. “We want them to still have that curiosity and learning to extend their thinking and discovery through kindergarten.”
Originally scheduled for implementation in the 2023 school year, the rollout was postponed to allow educators and administrators time to prepare for the adjustments. Spagnuolo expressed gratitude that the Ministry of Education listened to feedback from the teaching community. “We actually are thankful that the ministry listened to the feedback and gave one year to try to get our mind around it,” he remarked, adding that a 30-minute webinar is available online for further guidance.
As the new academic year approaches, parents are encouraged to take proactive steps to support their children’s readiness for kindergarten. Both Spagnuolo and Roberts provided strategies for families preparing to enter the classroom environment.
Reading with children is particularly important, according to Spagnuolo. “We need kids to have books in hand because the research is coming out and it’s very clear that having a book in your hand is much more effective than reading a story on an iPad,” he explained.
Roberts added that parents can help by engaging children in conversations about their surroundings. “Asking them about what they see, what they hear, what colors do you see? Where do you see numbers?” she suggested. These interactions can foster curiosity and a love for learning, setting a strong foundation for future academic success.
In addition to these recommendations, the Greater Essex and Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Boards will host their annual Kindergarten Open Houses on February 19, 2024. These events will provide an opportunity for parents and children to explore the upcoming changes and familiarize themselves with the new curriculum.
As Ontario moves forward with this enhanced kindergarten curriculum, the focus on early literacy and mathematics skills aims to better prepare young learners for their academic journeys ahead, while still nurturing their inherent curiosity through play.
