Odell Public Library Engages Community During National Library Lovers Month
In celebration of National Library Lovers Month this February, the Odell Public Library is enhancing its community offerings in Morrison. The library is dedicated to providing a variety of learning spaces, digital access, and engaging programs that cater to diverse interests and age groups. With a range of activities, including story times, Lego and Pokémon clubs, and game sessions, Odell is fostering a love for reading and community involvement.
Winter provides an excellent opportunity to explore Odell’s extensive digital resources. Through the Libby and Palace apps, patrons can access thousands of e-books and audiobooks. Users can easily browse materials by title, genre, or age group, ensuring that everyone finds something enjoyable. Additionally, for those who prefer traditional print, Odell can borrow materials from over 140 libraries across Illinois at no cost.
Engaging Programs and Activities
The library offers numerous programs designed to engage the community. Every Thursday evening, families can drop in for a 30-minute storytime, perfect for preschool to early elementary-age children. Each session features stories, songs, rhymes, and crafts. Themes for February include “Winter Sleep” on February 19 and “Cats” on February 26, with families encouraged to wear pajamas.
For those interested in building, the Lego Club meets on the first Saturday of each month from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Participants of all ages can create using a variety of bricks, including Lego, Duplo, and MegaBlok. Creations are showcased in the library until the next club meeting. Pokémon enthusiasts can join the Pokémon Club on the second Saturday from 10 to 11:30 a.m., offering a space for fans to play, trade, and share knowledge about their favourite characters.
Odell also hosts weekly game sessions for those who enjoy socializing over a game. Regular activities include Pinochle on Mondays from 1 to 5 p.m., Scrabble on Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m., and chess on specified Mondays and Thursdays. The library’s book club meets on the second Thursday of the month, with this month’s selection being “The Seventh Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.”
Special Events and Community Involvement
On February 26 at 7 p.m., a Zoom chat will feature author Nico Lang, discussing his book “American Teenager,” which provides insight into the lives of eight teens navigating their futures. This event is free, but registration is required to receive the Zoom link. Interested participants can reach out via email at [email protected] for more details.
The library also invites community members to participate in a February Scavenger Hunt, adding a fun twist to library visits. Participants can solve a riddle for a chance to win a small prize.
Additionally, the Odell Public Library Friends group will host “Partnering for Health Chair Yoga & Mindfulness” with Becky West, a session focusing on mindfulness meditation and chair-based yoga practices. The event is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on February 24 in the Odell program room. West brings over 40 years of experience as a public health nurse and is a certified Hatha yoga instructor.
For those looking to explore local attractions, the library offers passes to places like the Putnam Museum, Sawmill Museum, and Niabi Zoo. These passes are available to adult library cardholders on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Odell Public Library is located at 307 S. Madison St. in Morrison. The library continues to seek community involvement and encourages anyone interested in supporting their initiatives to join the Friends group. There are no age requirements or financial commitments needed to be a member. For more information, individuals can email [email protected] or attend their next meeting on March 3 at 1 p.m. in the Odell Program Room.
