New Bachelor of Education Program Launches in Northwest Saskatchewan
North West College and the University of Regina have announced a partnership to deliver a Bachelor of Education program, set to launch in September 2026. This initiative aims to enhance access to teacher education in Saskatchewan’s northwest, addressing the pressing need for qualified educators in rural and Indigenous communities.
The collaboration is designed to remove barriers to post-secondary education, providing local students with the opportunity to pursue their teaching degrees close to home. The program will focus on the unique experiences of rural and remote learners, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to engage with their communities and provide culturally responsive education.
Significance of the Partnership
Dr. Eli Ahlquist, President and CEO of North West College, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “This partnership is a significant milestone for education in northwest Saskatchewan. By delivering the full Bachelor of Education program locally – and offering a block transfer option for eligible students – North West College is removing barriers and creating clear career pathways into teaching.”
Dr. Jeff Keshen, President of the University of Regina, echoed this sentiment, highlighting how effective collaboration can improve educational access across the province. “Delivering the Bachelor of Education program in the region is another successful example of how the University of Regina and North West College are working together to ensure that future teachers can prepare for their careers close to their home communities,” he noted.
Representatives from both institutions regard the establishment of this program as an investment in communities and the next generation of educators. They aim to equip students who are passionate about teaching with the skills necessary to make a meaningful impact.
Program Details and Community Impact
The Bachelor of Education program will create new pathways for aspiring teachers, allowing them to gain the qualifications needed to address the educational needs of their local communities. Interested students are encouraged to reach out to North West College for information on admissions requirements, enrollment timelines, and upcoming information sessions about the degree program.
