Learn Traditional Rattle Making at Nampa Workshop on Sept. 24
Residents of Northern Sunrise County have a unique opportunity to engage with Indigenous culture through a Rattle Making Workshop on September 24, 2023. Hosted at the Nampa Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) Office, the event will run from 18:00 to 21:00. Participants will have the chance to craft their own traditional Indigenous rattles and learn accompanying songs.
The workshop emphasizes the cultural significance of rattles, which are often utilized in ceremonies, healing practices, and storytelling. According to FCSS Director Amber Houle, “By offering this type of workshop, FCSS provides participants with an opportunity to learn directly from Knowledge Keepers, gain hands-on experience with traditional practices, and build respect for Indigenous culture.”
All individuals aged 16 and older are welcome to attend. Houle highlights that the workshop is perfect for anyone interested in exploring Indigenous culture through a hands-on crafting experience. “Participants will learn directly from Indigenous Knowledge Keepers about the meaning and significance of rattles, gaining hands-on experience in crafting a traditional item with their own hands,” she explains.
The rattles will be made using materials such as wood, animal hides, leather, small stones, beads, and various decorative items. The workshop promotes mindfulness, self-expression, and skill development, fostering a deeper understanding of Indigenous traditions.
The event is free of charge, and spaces are limited, so pre-registration is required. Local Elder Priscilla Lalonde will lead the session, ensuring participants receive authentic guidance. Light snacks and refreshments will be available during the workshop.
To secure a spot for the Rattle Making Workshop, interested individuals should contact the FCSS office by calling (780) 322-3954. This event offers a valuable chance to connect with Indigenous culture while honing crafting skills.
