A new educational facility is set to enhance the post-secondary landscape in Barrie, Ontario. Lakehead University will open a second Barrie STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Hub at 5 Ross Street in the fall of 2024. This expansion follows the establishment of the first hub at 24 Maple Avenue, which is already operational.

The Ross Street location aims to provide a modern environment for engineering and computer science students. Designed with flexible classrooms and active learning spaces, it will also include social areas and student services. Importantly, this site will feature graduate student offices, further supporting advanced studies and research.

The existing Maple Avenue hub has specialized laboratories equipped for research and teaching, including advanced facilities for motors, robotics, instrumentation, and mechatronics. Together, both locations will encompass a total of 27,000 square feet, dedicated to fostering innovation and practical learning experiences.

Barrie stands out as one of the few rapidly growing municipalities in the Greater Golden Horseshoe region that lacks a university campus. Mayor Alex Nuttall expressed enthusiasm about the new hub, stating, “The expansion of Lakehead University’s presence downtown is a major win for Barrie. This second STEM Hub location not only brings new energy to our core, but also enhances the student experience by creating vibrant, modern spaces to learn, collaborate and connect. It’s an investment in our students, our businesses and the future of our city.”

In addition to Lakehead University’s expansion, Georgian College has also established a presence in downtown Barrie. Located at 55 Mulcaster Street, Georgian College focuses on creative programming in design, visual arts, and emerging technologies. Dr. Gillian Siddall, President and Vice-Chancellor of Lakehead University, noted, “By creating new pathways for local learners and new talent pipelines for local employers, we are helping build a stronger, more resilient regional economy.”

Students interested in applying to the Barrie STEM Hub can visit the Lakehead University website for more information. This expansion not only benefits students but is also expected to contribute positively to the local economy and community development.
