Joliet Public Schools District 86 has announced the winners of its annual spelling bee, showcasing the talents of young spellers from the district’s elementary schools. Isaac Padilla, a fifth grader from Forest Park Individual Education, emerged as the champion during the event held at Pershing Elementary School. The runner-up, Israel Alarcon Carrillo, also from fifth grade at Isaac Singleton Elementary, demonstrated impressive skills throughout the competition.

Each elementary school within the district sent a representative to participate in the spelling bee. Competitors included Leonel Hernandez from T.E. Culbertson Elementary, Marlin Garcia from M.J. Cunningham Elementary, and Kyiah McKenzie from Eisenhower Academy, among others. Other participants were Danyella Arthur from Farragut Elementary, Aubree Ciszek from Thomas Jefferson Elementary, Annabelle Cordova from Edna Keith Elementary, Mateo Vazquez from A.O. Marshall Elementary, Angelina Davila from Pershing Elementary, Sofia Aguilar from Sator Sanchez Elementary, Kelia Bell from Carl Sandburg Elementary, Xander Bridgemon from Taft Elementary, Bently Garcia from Lynne Thigpen Elementary, and Gael Rodriguez Zarate from Woodland Elementary.

In a statement regarding the event, District 86 Superintendent Dr. Theresa Rouse commended all participants for their outstanding performances. “All the students did an exceptional job,” she said, emphasizing the challenges of spelling before a large audience. “Spelling in front of an auditorium filled with many people is difficult.”

Looking ahead, some of the district’s top junior high spellers will have the opportunity to compete in the 2026 Will County Regional Spelling Bee. Scheduled to take place at Lincoln-Way West High School in New Lenox, these students include Vanessa Vargas-Martinez of Dirksen Junior High, Yaretzi Jacinto of Gompers Junior High, Jude Dougherty from Hufford Junior High’s Individual Education Program, and Julia Yanchick of Washington Academy.

The annual spelling bee not only highlights the spelling prowess of the students but also fosters a sense of community among the schools and families involved in Joliet District 86. As these young spellers prepare for future competitions, their commitment to excellence serves as an inspiration for their peers and the community at large.
