Illinois Valley Community College (IVCC) has officially commenced construction on the $7.6 million Dr. Alfred E. Wisgoski Agricultural Education Center. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Friday, marking a significant milestone for the college and its commitment to agricultural education.

Located just south of the main campus and adjacent to IVCC’s 153-acre test plots, the new facility will provide students with valuable hands-on experiences to complement their classroom learning. The 10,250-square-foot center will feature modern classrooms, flexible learning spaces, conference rooms, and lounge areas, with plans for a future greenhouse to further enhance educational opportunities.

Building for the Future of Agriculture

The project is bolstered by substantial financial support, including a grant of $3.5 million from the U.S. Department of Economic Development Administration, a $240,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, and a $1 million donation from the Wisgoski family. These contributions underscore the community’s commitment to strengthening agricultural education at IVCC.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, IVCC President Tracy Morris emphasized the importance of agriculture in the region, stating, “Ag has long been a cornerstone of our community, and here at IVCC, we are proud to see that tradition thrive.” She also noted that the agriculture program has experienced a remarkable growth of 48 percent since 2020, highlighting the increasing demand for skilled professionals in the agricultural sector.

The late Dr. Alfred E. Wisgoski, after whom the center is named, served as IVCC president from 1974 to 1996, holding the record for the longest tenure in the institution’s history. His leadership during a transformative period for the college helped lay the foundation for future growth and development.

Looking Ahead

The Dr. Alfred E. Wisgoski Agricultural Education Center is expected to open in 2027, providing a state-of-the-art environment for students pursuing careers in agriculture. This initiative aligns with IVCC’s mission to foster educational excellence and community engagement.
