Grande Prairie Library Invites Writers to Explore ‘The Woods’
The Grande Prairie Public Library (GPPL) has launched its annual Collins Writing Contest, inviting creative writers from the region to submit stories inspired by the theme “The Woods.” The deadline for entries is February 28, 2026, providing ample time for local authors to craft their narratives.
Bailey Randolph, the Head of Children’s Teen Service at GPPL, highlighted the contest’s longstanding tradition, which dates back to the 1980s. “We like to bring all aspects of the literary to the library,” she stated. In recognition of local philanthropists Clem and Muriel Collins, the contest was renamed in their honor in 2000, reflecting their commitment to fostering community engagement through literature.
This year’s theme ties into GPPL’s summer reading initiative, aiming to stimulate creativity among writers. “It’s exciting to see what writers submit,” Randolph added, encouraging participation from all skill levels.
The contest is open to residents of the Municipal District of Greenview, the City of Grande Prairie, and the County of Grande Prairie. Participants can enter in various age categories: Grade 1-3, Grade 4-6, Grade 7-9, Grade 10-12, and Adult. Each writer is limited to one entry, with submissions capped at 2,000 words.
Submissions must be typed, double-spaced, and presented in a minimum 12-point font size. All entries must be written in English, ensuring accessibility to a broad audience. The deadline for submissions is set for Saturday, February 28, 2026, at 23:59.
For further details about the contest and submission guidelines, interested writers can visit the GPPL events page. This initiative not only promotes local talent but also enriches the literary culture within the Grande Prairie area, inviting community members to engage with storytelling in a creative and meaningful way.
