Students and staff at FACE Elementary School in Montreal commenced the 2025 academic year on August 28, 2025, in a brand-new facility located at 4835 Christophe-Colomb Ave. This transition marks a significant milestone for the bilingual institution, which serves both English and French sectors. The day began with classes starting at 7:45 a.m., followed by a ceremonial ribbon-cutting at approximately 9 a.m. to celebrate the new environment for learning.

As the only school in Montreal jointly operated by the English Montreal School Board (EMSB) and the Centre de services scolaire de Montréal (CSSDM), FACE Elementary has taken a major step forward. The new building is designed to enhance the educational experience, catering to the unique bilingual nature of the institution.

While elementary students have successfully transitioned to their new location, high school students will remain at the original facility on University Street for the foreseeable future. This building requires nearly $400 million in repairs, and plans for a comprehensive rehabilitation project have been postponed indefinitely, as confirmed by the province’s education minister. There are intentions to relocate high school students to the former Sun Youth headquarters and the historic Baron Byng High School on St-Urbain Street.

On the first day at the new location, EMSB Chair Joe Ortona and Commissioner Maria Corsi welcomed students and staff, expressing their enthusiasm for the new beginning. The EMSB network will see all students officially return to classes on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

This development comes amid ongoing discussions about the future of FACE School. Recently, artists and community members have rallied to support the institution, advocating for its preservation in light of plans that could alter its long-standing role in the community. The commitment to bilingual education remains strong, and the new facility serves as a testament to that dedication.

The launch of the new school year at FACE Elementary School not only symbolizes a fresh start for students but also underscores the importance of maintaining educational institutions that reflect the linguistic diversity of the region.
