Explore the Enchanting Gypsum Dunes of White Sands National Park
Visiting White Sands National Park in New Mexico offers a unique experience, particularly for those yearning for a different kind of white Christmas. Unlike the seasonal snow that blankets many regions during winter, this park is renowned for its stunning expanse of white gypsum sand, which glistens under the sun year-round. Spanning approximately 275 square miles in the arid Chihuahuan Desert, the area presents a striking contrast to the typical expectations of holiday landscapes.
As temperatures in November often reach into the high 20s Celsius, the coolness of the white sand surprises visitors. The sand’s distinctive color comes from gypsum, a calcium-sulphate mineral that possesses an unusual property: it contains roughly 2 percent chemically combined water by weight. This moisture not only contributes to the sand’s coolness but also enhances fire resistance, making gypsum a key component in construction materials like drywall.
Exploring the park reveals more than just stunning views. David Clements, PhD, a professor of biology and environmental studies at Trinity Western University, embarked on an adventure through the undulating dunes in search of signs of life. His efforts were rewarded with sightings of butterflies, including the elusive snout butterfly, and various beetle species. Larger animals such as kit foxes, kangaroo rats, and lizards tend to emerge during the cooler evenings, often remaining hidden beneath the sand during the heat of the day.
The park’s ecosystem faces challenges from the ever-shifting dunes, which can bury plants, including resilient species like yucca, struggling to keep their leaves above the surface. Visitors are advised to follow designated trails marked by long posts, as any human-made paths quickly vanish in the dynamic landscape. Dr. Clements recounts his experience of deviating slightly from the markers, leading to a disorienting adventure before ultimately re-establishing his bearings.
Reflecting on his journey, Clements draws a parallel between the park’s trail markers and the guidance we encounter in life. “The markers that wisdom has set out for you in this life are there to help and guide you,” he advises. “Always follow them.”
For those interested in learning more about the unique geological features of White Sands, Dr. Clements recommends the YouTube channel GEO GIRL, hosted by Dr. Rachel Phillips, which provides insightful commentary on the formation of gypsum sands.
White Sands National Park continues to captivate visitors with its otherworldly beauty and ecological significance, making it a must-see destination for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.
