Students in Durham will experience a later start to the school year in 2026, as school boards have finalized the calendar for the 2026-2027 academic year. Classes will commence on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, following consultations with the local community. This decision comes after deliberations about the potential for an earlier return to school, which would have conflicted with the Labour Day holiday on September 7.

The Durham District School Board (DDSB) and the Durham Catholic District School Board opted against an earlier start after considering the implications for students engaged in full-time summer employment and families planning vacations through Labour Day. A staff report presented at the board meeting on February 18 highlighted that starting school before Labour Day would mark a significant change from the long-standing tradition of beginning the school year after this holiday.

“Starting the school year earlier than September 8, 2026, and relocating a September PA Day was also considered but would represent a significant shift from the long-standing schedule,” DDSB staff noted. The board expressed concerns about the negative impact this change could have on students and families.

In light of the later school start, the board faced challenges in aligning Professional Activity (PA) days with significant religious observances. Jim Markovski, Associate Director of Equitable Education for the DDSB, remarked, “Because we start late next year, and because of the requirement for a PA day in October for the elections, there was limited opportunity to provide that opportunity for 2026-2027, but it has not been lost on us going forward for future years.”

The proposed calendars have now been submitted to the Ministry of Education for final approval. This decision impacts not only the DDSB but also the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board and the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland Clarington Catholic District School Board, which will follow similar timelines.

For families and students, the finalized calendar brings clarity about the academic year ahead. The boards continue to consider the needs of the community in shaping future school calendars, aiming to harmonize educational requirements with the diverse observances of their constituents.

As the September 2026 date approaches, stakeholders are encouraged to stay informed about any updates related to the school year and the specific dates for PA days and holidays.
