Dixon Native Joins U.S. Navy Submarine Training Program

Petty Officer 3rd Class Damien DuBois, a resident of Dixon, is currently undergoing training to join the U.S. Navy’s esteemed submarine force. With a history spanning over 125 years, this branch of the Navy is integral to the United States’ defense strategy. DuBois, who graduated from Dixon High School in 2024, joined the Navy one year ago and is now a student at the Naval Submarine School located at Naval Submarine Base New London.
DuBois reflects on his diverse experiences, stating, “Growing up, I worked a multitude of different jobs, which taught me to adjust, adapt quickly and to strive to do my best.” He emphasizes that adaptability is crucial within the Navy, where the ability to respond to changing situations is essential. His decision to enlist was inspired by his grandfather, who also served in the Navy. “I joined the Navy to follow his lead and take control of my path,” DuBois shared.
Training and International Collaboration
At the Naval Submarine School, DuBois is training to become an information systems technician specializing in communications. The school plays a vital role in preparing both officers and enlisted personnel for operational submarine commands. Notably, DuBois is training alongside members of the Royal Australian Navy, who are participating in the AUKUS Pillar 1 Optimal Pathway. This initiative is a trilateral partnership involving Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, aimed at enhancing Australia’s capabilities in acquiring a conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarine fleet.
Once DuBois completes his training, he will be qualified to serve on one of three types of submarines: fast-attack submarines, ballistic-missile submarines, or guided-missile submarines. Fast-attack submarines are designed for various missions, including hunting enemy vessels and conducting intelligence operations. The Virginia-class fast-attack submarine exemplifies advanced stealth and operational capabilities.
Ballistic-missile submarines, often referred to as “boomers,” provide strategic deterrence through their ability to launch missiles from undetectable platforms. The new Columbia-class ballistic-missile submarines will replace the current Ohio-class submarines, ensuring a continuous strategic deterrent through the 2080s.
Personal Reflections and Future Aspirations
DuBois expresses immense pride in his rapid progression from a seaman recruit to a petty officer third class. “I am most proud of having worked my way from being a seaman recruit up to now a petty officer third class within a short time,” he remarked. This advancement has allowed him to take on leadership roles and assist fellow sailors in reaching their potential.
“Serving in the Navy means the world to me,” DuBois stated. “I can protect my country and family to ensure they can live happily and in peace.” He also acknowledges the support from his family, particularly his mother, Kristy McClain, his father, Michael DuBois, and his late grandfather, Roy McClain, expressing gratitude for their encouragement throughout his journey.
As DuBois continues his training, he embodies the values of the U.S. Navy, combining personal dedication with a commitment to national security. His story highlights the vital role that young individuals play in maintaining the Navy’s long-standing tradition of excellence and service.
