Discover Scenic Driftless Roads: A Road Trip Through Illinois
Taking a break from the ordinary can lead to unexpected adventures, particularly when exploring the scenic roads of the Sauk Valley in Illinois. This region, known for its unique topography due to the absence of glacial drift, invites travelers to embark on a road trip that blends captivating landscapes with historical landmarks and local charm.
One popular route takes drivers from Mount Carroll to Scales Mound, meandering through the heart of the Driftless Region. This area escaped the ice age’s glacial deposits, preserving its natural beauty across approximately 15,000 square miles. The result is a landscape marked by hills, valleys, and picturesque scenery that draws both casual motorists and avid motorcyclists. According to greatmotorcycleroads.com, much of this route ranks among the top motorcycle rides in Illinois.
Travelers begin their journey in Mount Carroll, where U.S. Route 52 intersects with state Routes 40, 64, and 78. The town’s center is home to the historic courthouse, flanked by quaint brick streets and local businesses, including the vintage Bridgewater Inn, established in 1886. An intriguing feature is a Civil War statue, notable for its unique annex, marking it as a one-of-a-kind memorial.
Explorers can visit the former Shimer College campus, which is currently under renovation, or take a spine-tingling tour of the Raven’s Grin Inn, a haunted house open by appointment. Additionally, a restored pony truss bridge over Carroll Creek offers a glimpse into the past, connecting to a former stagecoach route.
Heading north from Mount Carroll on Route 78, travelers encounter the Elizabeth Blacktop, a 20-mile stretch that introduces the scenic Driftless Region. This winding road features charming sites, including an old pony truss bridge over the Plum River and a striking maple tree at Trinity Lutheran Church, which transforms into vibrant hues in autumn. Along the way, visitors may also explore local wineries like Rocky Waters and Massbach Ridge, or enjoy a stroll through the Schurmeier Teaching Forest.
The town of Elizabeth, founded in 1825, celebrates its bicentennial in 2025. This historic locale, once a hub for stagecoach travel, is home to the Apple River Fort, now a State Historic Site. The fort features a visitor center with exhibits, a film, and a gift shop, making it an educational stop for road trippers. Self-guided tours of the fort allow visitors to immerse themselves in local history.
Elizabeth also boasts unique attractions like the Highway 20 Brewing Company, the Chicago Great Western Railroad Museum, and Paul’s Vintage Bikes, a bicycle museum housed in a former school building from the late 1800s.
Continuing west on Route 20 leads to Scales Mound, a village not easily accessible from major highways but worth the journey. Its slogan, “At the top in Illinois,” aptly describes its position near the state’s highest point, Charles Mound, which welcomes hikers during select summer Saturdays. Scales Mound retains a nostalgic charm with a full-service Sinclair gas station and Country House Grocery, where visitors can experience the quaintness of yesteryears.
Those seeking further exploration can venture to Shullsburg, Wisconsin, where a curious phenomenon known as Gravity Hill creates the illusion of vehicles rolling uphill. Classic taverns like the New Diggings General Store and Lead Mine Tavern are also within a short drive, offering local fare and a taste of the area’s hospitality.
For those looking to escape the ordinary, the scenic drive from Mount Carroll to Scales Mound provides an ideal opportunity for discovery. The route combines natural beauty with historical intrigue, making it a perfect getaway for anyone eager to explore the hidden treasures of Illinois’ Driftless Region.
In summary, the Sauk Valley presents a compelling case for a road trip. With its unique landscapes, rich history, and vibrant local culture, travelers may find that the journey itself is as rewarding as the destination.
