CTR Catholic Schools Enhance Early Education for Children
The CTR Catholic Schools division is prioritizing early childhood education by offering engaging Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten programs across several local institutions. Schools such as St. Mary’s School and École Good Shepherd School provide children with a nurturing environment that promotes language development, early numeracy skills, and social-emotional growth. These programs emphasize play-based learning, ensuring children are well-prepared for future educational endeavors.
In the Kindergarten programs, children engage in activities that foster independence and collaborative skills. Options include full-day or part-time attendance, catering to various family needs. Through an authentic Catholic education, students have the opportunity to explore their world via storytelling, numbers, and interactive play, all while developing connections with God and their peers. This holistic approach aims to promote spiritual, academic, cultural, and social development within a safe and caring environment.
The impact of consistent, full-day learning is evident, as noted by Paula Hamilton, a kindergarten teacher at Holy Spirit Academy. “We strive to develop students’ love of learning, faith, and curiosity for the world around them. Our unique ‘loose parts play’ program allows students to use their imagination and problem-solve through collaborative play, fostering language and social skills,” Hamilton stated. Daily outdoor exploration is also integral, helping to lay strong foundations in literacy and numeracy.
Parents have shared positive experiences regarding their children’s growth in these programs. Darren and Breanna, parents at École Good Shepherd School, remarked, “We have seen our son grow into a more confident, smart, and kind individual, and we know that school has played a big part towards this development.” They highlighted the importance of the school’s approach to teaching respect, conflict resolution, and emotional regulation, alongside meaningful lessons in Catholic faith.
Mrs. Edwards, a Kindergarten teacher at St. Mary’s School, echoed similar sentiments. “Our program nurtures a strong sense of belonging within a warm, faith-filled community. Through purposeful play and early academic learning, children build confidence and positive relationships,” she explained.
CTR Catholic Schools continue to demonstrate impressive results on Alberta Education’s assurance measures. In 2024 to 2025, the division reported a score of 92.6 percent in the Education Quality measure, surpassing the provincial average of 87.7 percent. Additionally, CTR achieved 91.6 percent for providing Welcoming, Caring, Respectful, and Safe Learning Environments, compared to a provincial result of 84.4 percent. Superintendent Dr. Andrea Holowka emphasized the division’s commitment to fostering a supportive community for every child.
Parents have echoed the positive experiences of their children. Joanna P. praised the St. Francis of Assisi Academy Kindergarten program as “incredibly welcoming” and noted the profound impact of the teachers’ care and dedication. “We’ve been grateful for a program that builds confident learners through play and meaningful relationships,” she said.
Families interested in learning more about these educational opportunities can attend upcoming open houses at local schools. St. Mary’s School in Okotoks will host an open house on January 21, 2025, at 18:00. St. Francis of Assisi Academy in DeWinton will have its open house on January 22, 2025, at 17:00. École Good Shepherd School will welcome families on February 4, 2025, from 18:00 to 19:00, while Holy Spirit Academy in High River will host an open house on February 3, 2025, from 18:00 to 20:00.
CTR Catholic Schools invites all families, regardless of their religious background, to consider their faith-based education. Registration for Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten is now open, with before- and after-school care available at all Okotoks locations. Families can find more information and register by visiting their respective school websites or the main CTR site at redeemer.ab.ca.
