College of the Rockies Launches Gasfitter Class B Level 2 Program
The College of the Rockies (COTR) will introduce the Gasfitter Class B Level 2 program in January 2026, expanding its trades training offerings in the Kootenay region. This initiative addresses the growing employment demand for skilled gasfitters throughout British Columbia.
According to Ranjan Bhattacharya, Dean of Trades and Technology, “In January 2025, Gasfitter – Class B became a Red Seal trade in B.C. This means individuals entering the field will require both a Certificate of Qualification with a Red Seal endorsement from SkilledTradesBC and a Certificate of Qualification from Technical Safety BC.” The program is designed to provide students with the necessary technical training required to qualify for the Technical Safety BC Certificate of Qualification exam.
Program Details and Requirements
Gasfitters in Class B are responsible for the design, installation, repair, and maintenance of propane and natural gas systems across various settings, including residential, commercial, and industrial environments. The trade is particularly suited for individuals who possess strong mathematical skills, the ability to perform well under pressure, and a commitment to safety and precision.
Students who have previously completed the provincial Plumber Apprenticeship program, either at COTR or elsewhere, will receive credit for 1,500 of the required 3,000 workplace hours. They will also receive recognition for completing Level 1 of the Gasfitter Class B technical training. Additionally, learners who have already finished the Gasfitter Class B Level 1 program will be able to enroll directly in the Level 2 course starting in January.
The Gasfitter Class B program represents an attractive career path for tradespeople seeking to expand their skill sets. With steady employment opportunities across various sectors, including residential, commercial, and industrial, the program offers flexibility, especially when combined with plumbing or HVAC training.
Applications for the Gasfitter Class B Level 2 program are now open. Prospective students can find more information by visiting the COTR website at cotr.bc.ca/gasfitter.
This new program reflects COTR’s commitment to meeting the evolving needs of the local workforce and supporting the development of essential trade skills in the Kootenay region.
