Brandon University Hosts Events for Community Engagement and Awareness

Brandon University is gearing up for a series of significant events this week, showcasing community engagement and raising awareness on important issues. On Thursday, the university will host the Take Back the Night March, a demonstration aimed at raising awareness about violence against women. The march will commence at Princess Park at 18:00 and conclude at the Mingling Area in the Knowles-Douglas Students’ Union Centre.
In conjunction with this march, an art exhibition titled “Shift/Work: Portraits of Precarity” will open at 19:00 in the Glen P. Sutherland Gallery of Art. This exhibition features a variety of artistic expressions, including layered paintings and sound collages, all designed to illuminate the experiences of individuals facing precarious employment. Artist Lisa Wood, alongside research assistants Renata Truelove, Michael Vachon, and Dhairya Vaidya, will guide attendees through the exhibition during the opening event.
On Friday, Masoud Goharrokhi from the University of Manitoba will present a discussion on the significance of Netley Marsh and its implications for Lake Winnipeg. This talk is part of the Science Seminar Series and will take place at 14:30 in Room 4-47 of the Brodie building, with online access available for those unable to attend in person. Interested participants can email [email protected] for further details.
The university’s sports teams are also in action this week. The Bobcats men’s volleyball team is representing Canada at the NORCECA Final Six championship in Puerto Rico after earning their spot by winning the U SPORTS national championship this past spring. The championship runs from today until Sunday. Additionally, the BU soccer teams will host Université de Saint-Boniface on Sunday at Cougars Field, with the women’s match starting at 13:00 and the men’s match following at 15:15.
To accommodate the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, Brandon University will be closed on October 13. However, the Healthy Living Centre will remain open from 11:00 to 19:00 for those looking to maintain their wellness routines during the break.
At nearby Assiniboine College, a wellness event series titled Fill your Cup aims to promote self-care among students and staff. This series is designed to help individuals rejuvenate their mental, emotional, and physical health through available community resources. All events are free and geared towards Assiniboine students and staff.
On Tuesday, the Assiniboine College Students’ Association will offer breakfast treats in the Len Evans Centre from 08:00 to 09:00 in celebration of North Hill Breakfast Day. Following this, a volunteer recruitment fair hosted by Volunteer Manitoba will take place on Wednesday at the Victoria Campus from 10:00 to 14:00.
Tickets are now available for the Assiniboine Advancement Dinner, which celebrates the achievements of alumni and recognizes award recipients for their contributions to the community. The event highlights the lasting impact of Assiniboine graduates across Manitoba and beyond.
The Cougars soccer teams will also compete against USB Les Rouges on Saturday at Cougars Field before heading to Winnipeg for additional matches on Sunday. All game details, including times, can be found at assiniboine.net/athletics.
The community is encouraged to participate in these events, which aim to foster connections and awareness on pressing issues while celebrating local talent and achievements.
