Brandon University is hosting a variety of events this week, showcasing student talent and inviting community participation. Noteworthy highlights include a speaker series, musical performances, and a visual arts showcase that reflects the university’s vibrant culture.

Art and Music Take Center Stage

Today at 11:30 a.m., the IshKaabatens Waasa Gaa Inaabateg Department of Visual Art welcomes Kevin McKenzie, an assistant professor at Brandon University (BU), to present his work as part of the speaker series. McKenzie boasts over 30 years of art practice and has exhibited both nationally and internationally. His artwork is included in the collections of prestigious institutions such as the National Gallery of Canada.

In addition to the art presentations, multiple student musical ensembles are preparing for their final performances of the fall term. The BU Brass Ensemble will perform a Christmas concert tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the Lorne Watson Recital Hall. Following that, the BU Concert Choir and the BU Chorale will take the stage on Wednesday at Knox United Church, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The BU Piano Ensemble will conclude the fall term with its finale on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in the same recital hall. More details about these performances can be found at BrandonU.ca/Music.

A visual art student showcase is also taking place this week at the Glen P. Sutherland Gallery of Art. The gallery will feature student work from four different courses, with opening hours from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. from Wednesday to Saturday.

Theatre and Community Engagement

Brandon University Theatre is set to present “Mother Courage and her Children,” a dark comedy with music, from December 1 to December 5. Showtimes are scheduled for 7 p.m. from Wednesday to Saturday, with an additional matinee at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Evans Theatre. For further show and ticket information, interested attendees can visit Events.BrandonU.ca.

Meanwhile, at Assiniboine College, the community is invited to participate in Storytelling Week, which runs from December 1 to December 5. Attendees can hear personal stories from elders and speakers, sharing insights from their lives and cultural traditions. The event aims to foster understanding and connection among participants.

Although the annual Holiday Buffet at Assiniboine College is sold out, future events from the Manitoba Institute of Culinary Arts will be advertised on assiniboine.net/events. Additionally, a Trades Program Mixer is set for December 4 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Len Evans Centre for Trades & Technology.

The college’s Alumni Association is also preparing for its annual Retiree Holiday Coffee Party on December 10, which will take place at the Victoria Avenue East campus starting at 9:30 a.m.

These events at both Brandon University and Assiniboine College illustrate the vibrant educational and cultural offerings available to students and the broader community.
