Members of the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) have overwhelmingly ratified a new four-year collective agreement, which includes a 3% annual wage increase for educators. According to the union, 91% of voters supported the agreement, marking a significant step in enhancing support for students and classroom conditions across the province. The ratification comes after a year of negotiations focused on pressing educational needs.

Details of the Agreement

In an interview, BCTF President Carole Gordon expressed optimism about the potential benefits for school-aged children, stating that the agreement would lead to “modest improvements” in public education. The contract commits to hiring more counsellors, learning-assistance teachers, and special education resource teachers to bolster support for students. This comes in the wake of heightened discussions around mental health resources, particularly following a recent tragedy in Tumbler Ridge.

Gordon highlighted that the agreement aims to enhance mental health support, stating, “What we’re seeing here is a commitment to better supports for kids, particularly through counsellors and psychologists.” The contract also addresses the need for increased preparation time for elementary school teachers and offers special allowances for educators in challenging roles, including those teaching Indigenous languages and in rural areas.

Despite these advancements, the agreement does not include provisions for reducing class sizes, a goal that has remained unmet for over 25 years, prompting some disappointment among educators. Gordon noted, “We know there’s a lot of disappointment that we can’t continue to see improvements in that.”

Next Steps for Ratification

The Ministry of Finance stated that the agreement aligns with the government’s balanced measures mandate, which aims to support public sector priorities in B.C. The Ministry emphasized that the deal includes additional funding for classroom supports and measures to alleviate teacher workloads.

As part of the ratification process, British Columbia’s 60 education boards are scheduled to vote on the agreement. The B.C. Public School Employers’ Association is also finalizing its approval process. Until ratification is complete, the full details of the agreement will remain confidential.

If fully ratified, the contract will be retroactive to July 1, 2025, and will remain in effect until June 30, 2029. Voter turnout among BCTF members was reported at 67%, reflecting strong engagement within the teaching community regarding this critical agreement.

Gordon reiterated the union’s commitment to advocating for improved classroom conditions, more resources, and better support for teachers to enhance the educational experience for students across the province.
