More than 200 artworks created by over 65 Grade 12 students were showcased during the grand opening of the Mayor’s Celebration of Youth Arts (MCOYA) 2026 at the Aurora Cultural Centre on April 14, 2026. This annual event highlights the creativity of local high school students, engaging parents, dignitaries, and art enthusiasts in an inspiring atmosphere.

The MCOYA features works from students at various schools, including Aurora High School, Cardinal Carter Catholic High School, and Dr. G.W. Williams Secondary School, among others. This year’s exhibition runs until April 19, 2026, marking a significant moment for the young artists and the community.

At the opening reception, Mayor Tom Mrakas expressed his pride in the talent displayed throughout the years. “Throughout those years, we’ve seen so many incredible pieces line the walls,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of the event in fostering local talent. The mayor highlighted that this year’s exhibition contributes to the legacy of artistic expression in Aurora.

Local dignitaries also attended the event, including Michael Parsa, Member of Provincial Parliament for Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill, and Dawn Gallagher Murphy, MPP for Newmarket-Aurora. They engaged with students, offering encouragement and support for their artistic endeavors.

Mayor Mrakas further encouraged the students to continue their creative journeys. “No matter where life takes you, I hope you keep creating. Keep pushing boundaries,” he said. He acknowledged the vital role of teachers and parents in nurturing the students’ creativity, thanking them for their support.

The event was sponsored by local businesses, including ROCA Financial Solutions, represented by Rossy Bustamente. Bustamente, a former fashion designer turned financial professional, drew parallels between the two fields. “Art and finance are ultimately about people. They are about identity, confidence, and possibility,” she stated, reinforcing the importance of supporting young artists.

The exhibition features a diverse array of works from talented students such as Cassandra Almeida, Gabrielle Awoyemi, and Hannah Stewart, among many others. Each piece reflects the individuality and creativity of the artists, showcasing their unique perspectives.

The Aurora Cultural Centre, which has hosted the MCOYA since its inception in 2011, continues to play a crucial role in promoting local talent. The centre has adapted over the years, hosting events at various locations and even transitioning to virtual formats during the pandemic.
