Alberta Government Allocates $143 Million for School Support Teams
The Alberta Government has announced an investment of $143 million to establish support teams aimed at addressing the growing complexity of student needs in classrooms. This initiative will create 476 complexity teams across the province, each based in a K-6 school. The teams will consist of one teacher and two educational assistants dedicated to assisting students with diverse academic, behavioral, social, and emotional requirements.
Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides emphasized that while average class sizes in Alberta remain within acceptable ranges, the composition and complexity of those classes are rapidly increasing. “Establishing complexity teams will help teachers manage increasingly diverse classrooms and, most importantly, ensure that more students receive individual attention,” Nicolaides stated. By focusing on the formative K-6 years, the government aims to intervene early, preventing larger issues from developing in later grades.
The complexity teams will be equipped to provide tailored support to students. This includes aiding those who are learning English, managing disruptive behavior, and offering enrichment to students with special needs. When necessary, the teams can also bring in additional specialists to further enhance classroom support.
According to a news release from the Alberta Government, southern Alberta will see the establishment of 43 complexity teams in various school divisions south of Calgary. Each team will work collaboratively with teachers to ensure that the varied needs of students are met effectively.
The government believes that addressing student needs during the early years of education is not only more effective but also less costly than trying to remediate behavioral or academic gaps in secondary school. This proactive approach underscores the importance of early intervention in education.
Through this funding and the establishment of complexity teams, the Alberta Government aims to create a more inclusive and supportive learning environment that acknowledges the diverse challenges faced by students today. By prioritizing these initiatives, they hope to foster better educational outcomes for all students in the province.
