Acadia University Finalizes New Agreement with Library Staff
Acadia University in Wolfville, N.S., has finalized a new collective agreement with its library staff, laboratory technicians, and administrative assistants. The agreement comes after four days of negotiations in October 2023, culminating in a successful ratification by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 2, which represents 87 members on campus.
In a statement released on Thursday, university president and vice-chancellor Jeff Hennessy expressed pride in the collaborative efforts that led to this agreement. He noted, “This is the second time this year I’ve been able to say how proud I am of everyone involved in negotiating a new collective agreement.” Hennessy emphasized that fostering teamwork is a core commitment of the university’s strategic direction, and this successful bargaining process reinforces their dedication to a supportive work environment for employees.
Earlier in 2023, Acadia University also ratified its 17th bargaining agreement with the faculty association, highlighting a trend of constructive negotiations across various employee groups.
The chief shop steward for SEIU, Lucas Evans, praised his team’s dedication during the negotiation process. He remarked, “I am incredibly proud of our SEIU team, and our efforts throughout this process.” Evans also commended the university’s representatives for their preparedness and willingness to engage in meaningful discussions.
As the university progresses, this new agreement not only reflects the importance of collaboration but also sets a positive precedent for future negotiations, ensuring that all employees feel valued and supported. The ratification of this agreement is a significant step forward in promoting a healthy work environment at Acadia University, which continues to prioritize the well-being and satisfaction of its staff.
