Vestas Expands Polish Operations to Meet German Wind Demand

Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas is set to enhance its operations in Poland to meet the surging demand for wind turbines in Europe, particularly in Germany. According to a report by Reuters, this expansion will primarily focus on increasing production capacity to support Germany’s ambitious wind energy projects.

The capacity expansion will include the addition of a new production line at Vestas’ facility in Goleniow, which is expected to create approximately 300 new jobs. This move comes as Germany aims to expand its wind turbine capacity by 5.1 gigawatts (GW) in 2025, following the installation of 2.2 GW of new capacity in the first half of the year. This figure represents a remarkable 67% increase compared to the same period last year and marks the highest volume of new wind capacity added in eight years.

Despite these advancements, the German Wind Energy Association has indicated that the current rate of installations is not on track to meet the official targets set out in the Renewable Energy Sources Act, commonly referred to as the EEG. The association noted earlier this year that achieving these targets may not be feasible until 2026 at the earliest.

Record Approvals and Industry Challenges

During the first half of 2025, Germany also achieved a record approval of 7.8 GW for new wind energy capacity, a significant 55% increase compared to approvals in the first half of 2024. While this growth reflects a positive trend for renewable energy, the gap between actual capacity expansion and legally mandated goals remains a point of concern.

Leonhard Birnbaum, the chief executive of E.ON, one of Germany’s largest power utilities, recently called for an end to subsidies for wind and solar power. In an interview with Sueddeutsche Zeitung, he stated, “First priority for grid connection should go to whoever creates jobs.” He highlighted that while the costs associated with the fixed feed-in tariff for new solar power may seem manageable annually, the long-term impact over 20 years could accumulate to billions.

As Vestas ramps up its production capabilities in Poland, the focus on meeting Germany’s burgeoning demand for wind energy underscores the critical role that renewable sources will play in the region’s energy transition. The company’s expansion reflects both the opportunities and challenges faced by the wind energy sector as it strives to align with governmental objectives and market needs.
