U.S. LNG Exports Hit Record Levels as Demand Surges

U.S. demand for natural gas to be converted into liquefied natural gas (LNG) reached a remarkable high of over 19 billion cubic feet (bcf) on Friday. This marks the third consecutive day of record usage, according to preliminary data from the financial firm LSEG. As the world’s largest exporter of LNG, the United States continues to see significant growth in gas consumption.

The surge in demand is primarily driven by the two leading U.S. exporters. Cheniere Energy’s Sabine Pass plant in Texas extracted 5.1 bcf on Friday, while Venture Global’s Plaquemines plant in Louisiana continued its expansion, pulling 4.2 bcf on the same day. This increase reflects a substantial rise from an average demand of less than 12 bcf per day in 2024.

The ramp-up of production at the Plaquemines facility, which commenced operations in the last week of 2024, has been a crucial factor in the recent demand increase. Currently, it is processing over 4 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd), highlighting its growing importance in the U.S. LNG landscape.

Seasonal Patterns and Future Projections

Typically, U.S. LNG output and natural gas demand tend to rise during the cooler months, as plants operate more efficiently under these conditions. The majority of maintenance shutdowns are strategically planned for the summer months, allowing for continuous operation during peak demand periods.

The current trend suggests a robust outlook for U.S. LNG exports, driven by both domestic and international factors. As global energy markets evolve, the U.S. is well-positioned to maintain its status as a key player in the LNG sector.

According to LSEG data, the continued demand for LNG reflects the broader energy needs and strategies of various countries, seeking to diversify their energy sources. This trend is likely to influence pricing and availability on the global stage, as the U.S. capitalizes on its vast natural gas reserves.
