Surrey Traffic Control Firm Fined Nearly $50K for Safety Violations
A traffic control company based in Surrey has been fined $48,380.25 by WorkSafeBC due to serious safety violations at a job site in West Kelowna. The penalties arose from what WorkSafeBC described as “high-risk, repeated violations” that compromised worker safety during traffic control activities.
On July 29, 2025, WorkSafeBC issued a stop-work order after observing that four employees of Lanesafe Traffic Control Ltd. were performing traffic control duties in the travel lane while utility services were engaged in a pole set transfer. Notably, the site lacked essential safety measures, such as barriers or automated flagging assistant devices, which are crucial for protecting both workers and motorists.
According to WorkSafeBC, the company failed to position traffic control personnel in locations deemed safe during their risk assessment. Instead, these individuals were stationed in active traffic areas, heightening the risk of accidents.
The regulatory body emphasized the importance of adhering to safety protocols, stating, “The firm failed to ensure traffic control persons were in a position that had been identified in the risk assessment as a safe location and were not positioned in the travelled portion of the roadway.”
As of now, there is no indication of a review or appeal regarding the penalties levied against Lanesafe Traffic Control Ltd. This case serves as a reminder of the critical need for strict compliance with safety regulations in construction and traffic management sectors. The financial penalty reflects the serious nature of the violations and aims to reinforce the importance of workplace safety.
In light of this incident, industry experts continue to advocate for enhanced safety training and stricter enforcement of regulations to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
