Surrey Food Bank Distributes Record 201,000 Pounds of Food
The Surrey Food Bank achieved a significant milestone in July 2023, distributing a record-breaking 201,000 pounds of food to nearly 20,000 individuals, including 502 new households. This figure represents an increase of 70,000 pounds compared to the same month last year, highlighting the growing demand for food assistance in the community.
Executive director Kim Savage emphasized the profound impact of these numbers. “The numbers tell one story, but what they really mean is full cupboards, fewer tough choices at the checkout, and families able to sit down to a meal together,” she stated. As the community approaches the fall season and prepares for Thanksgiving, Savage expressed hope for continued support from local residents.
Community Engagement and Volunteer Opportunities
In addition to food distribution, the Surrey Food Bank is actively seeking volunteers to assist with its operations. The next application window for prospective volunteers will be open from September 15 to September 26, 2023. Individuals interested in helping out can find more information on the food bank’s website at surreyfoodbank.org/get-involved/volunteer.
The food bank encourages community members to consider supporting their local food assistance programs. Alongside the Surrey Food Bank, organizations such as Guru Nanak Food Bank, Storehouse (formerly Cloverdale Community Kitchen), Sources Food Bank, and the Muslim Food Bank also play vital roles in addressing food insecurity in the region.
As the demand for food assistance continues to rise, initiatives like those of the Surrey Food Bank are crucial in ensuring that families have access to the resources they need. The organization’s efforts not only provide immediate relief but also foster a sense of community and solidarity among residents.
