Rankin Inlet Invests $800,000 in Advanced Metal Shredder
Rankin Inlet has made a significant investment in environmental management by acquiring a state-of-the-art metal shredder for $800,000. The new machine, which is expected to enhance waste management at the local landfill, aims to address the growing challenge of metal accumulation in the community.
Addressing Landfill Challenges
According to Mayor Harry Towtongie, the decision to purchase the shredder stems from the need to manage the excessive metal waste in the landfill. He explained that the community must find effective ways to dispose of the metal to create more space at the dump. “We want to keep the community a little cleaner and have a less bulky dumpsite,” Towtongie stated. The mayor noted that the initiative has already resulted in reclaimed sections of the dump, which are now significantly clearer.
The impressive capabilities of the shredder are highlighted by Towtongie’s observation that it can shred a truck in just ten minutes. This efficiency is expected to dramatically improve waste processing in the region. The machine, which is brand new, was brought to Rankin Inlet without shipping costs thanks to a collaboration with Agnico Eagle Mines. “We just couldn’t let that deal go by,” Towtongie remarked, emphasizing the importance of strategic partnerships in achieving municipal goals.
Future Benefits for the Community
The acquisition process began in winter 2023, with the hamlet navigating customs regulations to ensure a smooth arrival of the equipment. Towtongie expressed optimism about the shredder’s potential impact over the next four to five years, as the community grapples with an influx of scrap metal due to ongoing construction and an increase in vehicle registrations, which reportedly add about 100 new vehicles every summer.
While the immediate focus will be on processing scrap metal, there are plans to expand operations in the future. Towtongie explained that the shredded metal alongside domestic garbage can be repurposed for landfill use, creating a smoother surface when covered with gravel. He described the shredder as “truly an interesting machine,” highlighting its user-friendly, remote-controlled operation that eliminates the need for manual handling.
As Rankin Inlet continues to grow and expand, the new metal shredder is anticipated to play a crucial role in maintaining the community’s environmental standards and enhancing overall waste management practices. The initiative not only supports cleaner living conditions but also reflects a proactive approach to municipal waste challenges.
