Canadian carrier Porter Airlines has introduced its winter flight schedule from Ottawa International Airport (YOW), featuring new non-stop routes to several sought-after sunny destinations. The airline now connects Ottawa directly to Puerto Vallarta, Nassau, and Cancun, alongside services to Grand Cayman and Liberia in Costa Rica. This expansion marks an increase in the number of non-stop routes offered by Porter, positioning it as the airline with the most flights from YOW.

The newly launched services include weekly flights to Nassau, six weekly flights to both Puerto Vallarta and Cancun, a daily service to Liberia, and bi-weekly flights to Grand Cayman. Porter now operates a total of 24 non-stop routes from Ottawa, showcasing a significant commitment to expanding its network in the region.

Porter Airlines utilizes the Embraer E195-E2, a modern aircraft with 132 seats configured in a two-by-two arrangement, eliminating middle seats for passenger comfort. Comprehensive details regarding flight schedules and booking can be accessed through Porter’s official website, flyporter.com.

Ongoing Negotiations with Dispatchers’ Union

The launch of these new routes coincides with critical developments in labor negotiations. The Canadian Airline Dispatchers Association (CALDA), which represents flight dispatchers at Porter, announced that its members are in a legal position to strike starting from January 20, 2026, if an agreement is not reached. This announcement was made following a unanimous vote among members in favor of potential job action.

Negotiations for the flight dispatchers’ first collective agreement have been underway for over 14 months, with federal mediators currently involved to facilitate the process. According to Mark Yezovich, the incoming national president of CALDA, the negotiations are expected to conclude by December 29, 2023.

As Porter Airlines embarks on its new winter routes, the outcome of these labor negotiations remains a significant factor for the airline and its staff. The expansion into new sunny destinations highlights Porter’s strategic moves in a competitive market, while the situation with CALDA underscores the challenges facing the airline industry as it navigates operational and labor dynamics.
