OPEC+ is poised to examine a potential increase in oil production by 137,000 barrels per day for April, marking the end of a three-month pause in production adjustments. This decision comes as the group anticipates peak summer demand and responds to rising prices influenced by escalating tensions between the United States and OPEC member Iran.

The proposed output increase reflects the need for OPEC leaders, particularly Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, to regain market share. This is especially critical as other members, including Russia and Iran, face challenges due to Western sanctions. Additionally, Kazakhstan is witnessing a recovery in oil output following recent setbacks. The meeting of eight OPEC+ producers—Saudi Arabia, Russia, the UAE, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Iraq, Algeria, and Oman—is scheduled for March 1, 2024.

In a related development, Saudi Arabia has activated a contingency plan to boost its oil output and exports in the event that a U.S. military strike on Iran disrupts oil flows from the Middle East. According to two sources familiar with the plan, this strategy underscores the kingdom’s readiness to mitigate potential supply shocks.

The dynamics of the global oil market remain fluid, with OPEC+ balancing production levels to accommodate both member nations’ interests and the shifting landscape of global demand. The upcoming discussions are critical as they will shape the strategy for the group in the face of both internal and external pressures.

Officials from OPEC and representatives from Russia and Saudi Arabia did not respond immediately to requests for comment regarding these developments.

As the oil market braces for possible changes, the outcomes of the OPEC+ meeting could have significant implications for global oil prices and supply chains, particularly as summer approaches and demand typically surges.
