A newly reconfigured exit ramp from westbound Interstate 80 to Larkin Avenue (Illinois Route 7) in Joliet opens on Saturday, March 16, 2024. The ramp is expected to be operational by 10:00 a.m., contingent on weather conditions, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). This upgrade will provide access to both northbound and southbound traffic on Larkin Avenue.

The new design replaces the previous system, which utilized separate exit ramps for northbound and southbound vehicles. A traffic signal will now manage vehicles at the top of the ramp, enhancing safety and efficiency for motorists.

As part of the preparations for this change, lane closures on westbound I-80 between Center Street and Larkin Avenue will commence at 21:00 on Friday. Despite the closures, IDOT assures that at least one lane will remain open overnight. Drivers can expect ongoing lane shifts, overnight closures, and potential delays as reconstruction efforts continue.

Ongoing Reconstruction Efforts

The opening of the Larkin Avenue ramp is part of a larger project to reconstruct Interstate 80 between Ridge Road in Minooka and U.S. 30 in Joliet and New Lenox. This multiyear initiative by IDOT aims to improve safety and traffic flow in the area. Officials advise motorists to exercise caution, reduce speed, and watch for construction workers and equipment in the work zones.

IDOT encourages all drivers to obey posted speed limits and remain vigilant as the project progresses. For more details about the I-80 reconstruction, individuals can visit the dedicated website at I80will.org or follow the Illinois Department of Transportation on social media platforms.
