New Bandshell Opens at Sugarbowl Park, Enhancing Community Access
Sugarbowl Park in Fort Erie has recently unveiled a new bandshell, expanding its appeal beyond the winter season. The addition aims to create year-round attractions for the community, complementing the new splash pad that replaced the outdated Kinsmen Pool last summer. The bandshell, located on the park’s north side near the Central Fire Station, is now operational and will soon be available for public reservations.
The project, approved in 2023, carries a total cost of $275,000. Funding sources include a $55,000 donation from the Fort Erie Lions Club, $20,000 from the Fort Erie Underwater Recovery Unit, and a public realm infrastructure grant of $70,000 from Niagara Region. Town communications manager Kevin Beauchamp stated that a concrete pad for the bandshell is currently curing, with remaining work involving an asphalt pathway and final site restoration expected to be completed within two weeks, depending on weather conditions.
Community Benefits and Future Events
Ward 1 Councillor George McDermott emphasized the strategic choice of location for the bandshell, citing the park’s open spaces and scenic features, including walkways and ponds. “There will be great opportunities to have concerts and movie nights out there,” McDermott noted, describing the bandshell as a “great addition” to the area.
In addition to the bandshell, Sugarbowl Park has seen improvements over the past year, including a new playground and an off-leash dog park. The park has also been home to a T-33 Red Knight airplane, which was erected on a pedestal in 2001. Currently, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 71 is engaged in fundraising efforts to restore this historic aircraft.
The enhancements at Sugarbowl Park reflect the community’s commitment to improving public spaces and providing diverse recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike. With the new bandshell set to host events, the park is positioned to become a vibrant hub for cultural activities throughout the year.
