Mobile Farmers Market Brings Fresh Produce to Richmond This Weekend

Farmers from across the region will converge on Richmond on August 30, 2025, for a unique “mobile farmers market.” This initiative, organized by Gagan Singh, an Abbotsford blueberry farmer and local farming advocate, aims to connect consumers directly with medium and large-scale farmers. The market will visit three communities throughout the day: Abbotsford in the morning, Surrey in the afternoon, and concluding in Richmond from 5 to 7 p.m. at 2691 Simpson Rd near Bridgeport.

Singh emphasized that the mobile market will feature a “good selection” of fresh produce. Attendees can expect to find items such as free-range eggs, cucumbers, zucchinis, eggplant, corn, chili peppers, tomatoes, raw honey, exotic mushrooms, garlic, potatoes, and radishes. As of Wednesday, Singh was finalizing the participating farmers and the specific produce available for sale.

This mobile market is a direct response to the increasing cost of food, which has left many households struggling. Singh pointed out that one in four Canadian families faces food insecurity. He stated, “Families are struggling, farmers are struggling, and, meanwhile, our food is caught in the middle of tariff battles and corporate markups.”

The barriers to local food production are significant, according to Singh. He highlighted challenges such as the high costs of land, labor, and government permits. Singh is particularly concerned about the alarming trend of farmers exiting the industry, with approximately six farmers leaving agricultural production in Canada every week. He personally knows two farmers in the Fraser Valley who recently decided to abandon farming.

The impact of climate change has compounded these difficulties, with severe weather events such as flooding and drought affecting crop yields. Singh noted that some farmers have lost up to half of their raspberry and blueberry crops this year due to extreme heat conditions.

At the mobile farmers market, farmers can sell their products directly to consumers, which helps keep prices lower compared to traditional grocery stores. Singh explained that large-scale farmers often rely on multiple middlemen to reach individual customers, which can inflate prices before the products arrive on store shelves.

The schedule for the mobile farmers market on August 30, 2025, is as follows:

– **Abbotsford:** 9 to 11 a.m. at Singh Farms, 494 Sumas Way
– **Surrey:** 1 to 3 p.m. at Dosanjh Farms, 15413 68 Ave.
– **Richmond:** 5 to 7 p.m. at Norman’s from S&H, 2691 Simpson Rd.
