The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced a recall of nearly 298,439 Dodge Darts from model years 2013 to 2016 due to a potential roll-away risk. This issue arises when the shifter cable detaches from the transmission, preventing the vehicle from shifting into the Park position. This recall specifically affects models with automatic transmissions, while those equipped with manual transmissions are not included.

The latest recall follows a previous action taken in 2019, when approximately 300,000 vehicles in the United States and another 20,000 in Canada were recalled for similar concerns. The NHTSA initiated an investigation in 2024 after a spike in reports indicated that the initial remedy had been ineffective. In June 2024, the agency confirmed that failures in the shifter cable bushing occurred after the installation of the prior recall remedy.

Stellantis Responds to Safety Concerns

Currently, Stellantis, the manufacturer of Dodge, is in the process of developing a remedy for this issue but has not yet provided a fix. The company plans to notify owners via mail once a solution becomes available. Until then, vehicle owners are advised to use their parking brakes whenever parked on an incline to prevent any potential roll-away incidents.

It is important for owners of affected Dodge Darts to check for updates regarding their vehicles. The NHTSA and Transport Canada provide resources where owners can verify if their vehicle is included in the recall by entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

This recall highlights ongoing safety concerns surrounding the Dodge Dart, a model that was discontinued in 2016. Previous attempts to rectify the roll-away risk have proven inadequate, prompting renewed vigilance from both consumers and regulatory agencies. As the automotive industry continues to address safety issues, it remains crucial for manufacturers like Stellantis to ensure that effective solutions are implemented to protect drivers and passengers.

As this situation develops, further information will be provided to affected vehicle owners regarding the recall remedy and any necessary inspections for previously repaired vehicles.
