Canadian iPhone Users Set to Receive Settlement from $14.4M Class Action

Eligible Canadian iPhone users are poised to receive payments following a significant class-action lawsuit against Apple. The $14.4 million settlement was approved by a judge in the B.C. Supreme Court in March 2024, concluding a legal battle that began in 2018. The lawsuit claimed that performance mitigation features in Apple’s iOS software versions 10.2.1, 10.3, 11, and 11.2 caused devices to age prematurely, degrade in performance, or shut down unexpectedly. This issue, widely known as “batterygate,” also implicated the batteries of affected iPhones.

The deadline for users to submit claims has now passed. According to an update provided on November 20, 2025, the review process for claims has been completed. Payments for eligible claims are expected to be distributed in early 2026.

For those who have not yet received any notices regarding their claims, a notice advises users to utilize the chatbot feature on the class action website to determine the status of their claims—whether approved, rejected, or not received.

Despite the settlement, Apple denied any wrongdoing or fault regarding the allegations made in the class action. The company had previously committed to a payment range of $11,137,500 to $14,427,500 for impacted users in Canada. Depending on the number of claims submitted, eligible Canadians might receive between $17.50 and $150 each.

To qualify for the settlement, customers (excluding those in Quebec) must have owned or operated an Apple iPhone model from the 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, SE, 7, or 7 Plus series running iOS 10.2.1 or later (for iPhone 6 series) or iOS 11.2 or later (for iPhone 7 series) before December 21, 2017.
