Canada Post Adopts New Duty Processor as U.S. Exemption Ends
Canada Post has announced the onboarding of a third-party technology provider to facilitate shipments across the U.S. border as the de minimis duty exemption is set to expire. Starting on August 29, 2023, packages valued at US$800 or less will no longer be exempt from duties, significantly altering the landscape for cross-border mail.
The impending changes have prompted postal carriers in over 25 countries to suspend services to the United States, while some Canadian small business owners have paused orders to U.S. customers as they adjust to the anticipated new shipping fees. This has created a sense of urgency among businesses that rely on cross-border transactions.
In a statement to CTV News, Canada Post emphasized its commitment to maintaining service continuity for customers. The carrier has partnered with Zonos, a processing system designed to collect duties and remit them directly to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. With this new arrangement, Canada Post aims to streamline the shipping process and reduce delays.
The upcoming duty changes include a 35 percent tariff imposed on Canadian goods by former U.S. President Donald Trump earlier this year. However, there are exceptions: documents and gifts valued under US$100 sent by individual Canadians will remain duty-free, provided they are not dispatched by businesses.
Canada Post reassured customers that it would provide further details to ensure that Canadians are adequately prepared for the new U.S. requirements. The shift in policy reflects broader changes in international trade dynamics and highlights the challenges faced by cross-border commerce amid evolving duty regulations.
As the deadline approaches, businesses and consumers alike are urged to stay informed about the implications of these changes on their shipping practices and costs.
