Cameco and Brookfield Partner with U.S. to Construct Nuclear Reactors
Cameco Corp. and Brookfield Asset Management Ltd. have established a partnership with the U.S. government to support the construction of nuclear reactors across the United States. This significant agreement involves financing and the facilitation of permitting for new nuclear projects, amounting to at least US$80 billion in Westinghouse reactors.
The collaboration comes after Cameco and Brookfield acquired Westinghouse in November 2023. Under the terms of the partnership, the U.S. government will gain a participation interest in the initiative. Once vested, this interest will provide the government with 20 percent of any cash distributions exceeding US$17.5 billion from Westinghouse following its granting.
For the U.S. government’s participation interest to vest, it must make a final investment decision and finalize agreements to ensure the construction of the reactors. This milestone is crucial for moving the project forward and securing the necessary funding.
Additionally, under specific conditions, the U.S. government will have the option to convert its participation interest into a warrant for shares in Westinghouse during an initial public offering. This would be equivalent to 20 percent of the company’s public value at that time, after accounting for the initial US$17.5 billion threshold.
This partnership is a pivotal step in the U.S. government’s efforts to bolster its nuclear energy capabilities, emphasizing the importance of nuclear power in meeting energy demands and reducing carbon emissions. By collaborating with established entities like Cameco and Brookfield, the U.S. aims to enhance its infrastructure for sustainable energy production.
This report was initially published by The Canadian Press on October 28, 2025. The implications of this agreement extend beyond financial arrangements, potentially shaping the future of nuclear energy in the United States. The successful development of these reactors could play a significant role in the country’s energy landscape, as it strives for greater sustainability and energy independence.
