BC Hydro has announced that it will begin significant upgrades to the electrical distribution system along South Road on Gabriola Island starting this spring. The upgrades are essential to accommodate increasing electricity demand, including the electrification plans of BC Ferries. Completion of the project is expected by Spring 2027.

The existing electrical infrastructure is nearing its capacity, prompting the need for enhancements. The planned upgrades involve double-circuiting the line along South Road, as well as installing new poles and replacing existing ones. Prior to the main construction phase, vegetation management will take place, which includes brushing, trimming, and selective tree removals. This preliminary work is scheduled to begin in late February.

As construction progresses, residents and visitors should expect potential traffic disruptions near work zones. BC Hydro will implement appropriate road signage and deploy traffic control personnel to ensure safety. Ted Olynyk, BC Hydro’s Manager of Community Relations, emphasized the importance of safety during this project. He stated, “The goal is to complete this project safely and responsibly. We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as we deliver these essential upgrades to maintain a safe and reliable power supply for Gabriola Island.”

In conjunction with BC Hydro’s efforts, BC Ferries is planning the installation of charging stations at the terminals serving the Gabriola route. These charging stations will support the new Island Class ferries, expected to enter service in 2026. The ferries will operate primarily on electric power, necessitating ground-based charging facilities.

Ceilidh Marlow, Senior Communications Advisor for BC Ferries, noted that the corporation is actively preparing to introduce the hybrid diesel-electric vessels on the route between Gabriola Island and Nanaimo Harbour. The partnership with BC Hydro and other suppliers aims to establish rapid-charging systems at each terminal. The goal is to have the vessels functioning in full electric mode by 2027, pending the completion of utility upgrades and necessary permitting.

The collaboration between BC Hydro and BC Ferries represents a significant step toward sustainable transportation and energy solutions for Gabriola Island, reflecting broader trends in electrification and infrastructure enhancement across the region.
