BC Ferries has cancelled four sailings between Nanaimo’s Departure Bay and Vancouver’s Horseshoe Bay on September 22, 2024, due to mechanical issues affecting one of its vessels. The affected sailings, which were scheduled throughout the day, include departures at 6:15 a.m. and 7:25 p.m. from Horseshoe Bay, as well as 2:45 p.m. and 10:40 p.m. from Departure Bay.

In a statement, BC Ferries indicated that “other sailings on this route are expected to proceed as scheduled.” Passengers traveling between Departure Bay and Tsawwassen can still access service as usual.

For those with bookings on the cancelled sailings, BC Ferries will reach out via its Customer Service Centre. The company will assist in accommodating passengers on alternate sailings later in the day or inform them if their bookings must be cancelled. If a sailing is cancelled, affected passengers will receive a refund.

Mechanical Issues Cause Disruptions

The cancellations stemmed from ongoing mechanical difficulties with the Queen of Surrey, which operates on a separate route between Horseshoe Bay and Langdale on the Sunshine Coast. On September 21, BC Ferries cancelled sailings on this route due to issues with the vessel’s main engine turbocharger. These issues persisted into Monday, prompting BC Ferries to reposition the Queen of Oak Bay, typically serving the Nanaimo-Vancouver route, to help maintain service on the Vancouver-Langdale route.

BC Ferries has advised passengers seeking to travel between Departure Bay and Horseshoe Bay on Monday to check the company’s website for the latest updates. “We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience you may experience as a result of these cancellations,” the company stated.

As the ferry operator navigates these mechanical challenges, it remains committed to minimizing disruption for its passengers. The recent cancellations highlight the ongoing challenges faced by BC Ferries as it manages its fleet while providing essential services to travelers in British Columbia.
