Alberta Unveils Website for Proposed West Coast Oil Pipeline

The Alberta government has launched an official website dedicated to a proposed bitumen pipeline aimed at transporting crude oil to the northwest coast of British Columbia. This initiative is intended to serve as a central hub for information regarding the project, ensuring both transparency and open dialogue with the public.

The website features a section aimed at dispelling common misconceptions about the pipeline, including claims that construction has already commenced or that the province is funding the project entirely. While Alberta announced an investment of $14 million in October for initial planning, the long-term goal is to have the private sector lead the project, with Indigenous partners involved in its development.

In December 2025, the proposal received significant backing as part of an energy accord signed between Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Prime Minister Mark Carney. The Alberta government aims to submit an application to the new federal major projects office by July 1, 2026, which is designed to expedite infrastructure projects considered to be in Canada’s national interest.

“Our new web page offers a transparent and accessible platform for everyone in Canada to stay informed,” said Brian Jean, the Energy and Minerals Minister, in a recent news release. The early stages of the project include engaging with Indigenous communities to determine the pipeline’s route, size, and to confirm market demand and economic feasibility.

Indigenous Relations Minister Rajan Sawhney emphasized the importance of Indigenous involvement, stating, “This new web page is more than a resource — it’s a commitment to transparency. Indigenous communities are helping guide the way on this project from day one.”

The proposed pipeline has the potential capacity to transport up to one million barrels of oilsands crude per day for export to Asian markets, with the Port of Prince Rupert identified as a suitable location for the marine terminal. Alberta plans to work with an advisory group that includes three major Canadian pipeline operators: Enbridge Inc., Trans Mountain Corp., and South Bow Corp.. As of now, no company has committed to constructing the pipeline.

This report was first published on January 6, 2026, by The Canadian Press, highlighting a significant step in Alberta’s efforts to expand its oil export capabilities. The government’s focus on transparency and public engagement through this new website reflects a broader strategy to address community concerns and foster collaboration among stakeholders.
