Tyler Ardron Shines with Four Tries as Canada Defeats US 34-20
In a stunning comeback to test rugby, Tyler Ardron scored four tries, leading Canada to a 34-20 victory over the United States in the opening match of the Pacific Nations Cup held in Calgary, Alberta. Ardron’s performance marked his return to the national squad after a four-year absence, a period during which Canada missed out on the 2023 World Cup and fell below the top 20 in world rankings.
Ardron, who previously represented Canada in the 2015 and 2019 World Cups, made his comeback under the guidance of new head coach Steve Meehan. At 34 years old, he secured his 39th cap for the national team, contributing significantly to their campaign for the 2027 World Cup in Australia.
Canada’s Strategic Play Overcomes Historical Challenges
Prior to this match, Canada had endured a challenging history against the United States, losing 14 of their last 15 encounters. This victory serves as a crucial step toward World Cup qualification. Ardron’s first try came just three minutes into the game, showcasing Canada’s fast-paced style that was based on a well-executed lineout and a cohesive forward pack.
Ardron completed a hat-trick by halftime, with his second try resulting from a brilliant cross-kick by fullback Peter Nelson after a quick penalty. The teams entered halftime with the score tied at 17-17. In the second half, Canada outscored the United States 17-3, with Ardron adding a fourth try and Nelson contributing another. The United States managed first-half tries through center Dominic Besag and Rufus McLean, but their attempts to breach Canada’s defense in the second half were unsuccessful.
“We talked a lot in sport about finding things that matter,” said Canada captain Lucas Rumball. “It really mattered to us today. That was the focus of the game, just making it matter: every minute, every tackle, every pass, everything, and I think we really showed it out there today.”
Tonga Triumphs Over Samoa in Parallel Match
In another match of the Pacific Nations Cup, Tonga defeated Samoa 30-16 in Nuku’alofa. Tonga dominated the first half, leading 20-6 at halftime, thanks to tries from Siosiula Moala and Sonatane Takulua. The team exhibited remarkable control of both territory and possession, converting chances with precision. Patrick Pellegrini added two conversions and two penalties, while Samoa’s AJ Alitimu kicked two penalties.
Samoa attempted a comeback with a try from Tuni Tuitama in the 60th minute, narrowing the score to 20-11. However, Tonga responded with a try from Samiuela Moli, solidifying their lead. Samoa concluded the match with a commendable try by Melani Nanai.
The Pacific Nations Cup features six teams: Fiji, Japan, Canada, the United States, Samoa, and Tonga. The top three teams, excluding Fiji and Japan who have already qualified, will advance to the next World Cup, while the last-place team will face a qualifying playoff.
Next weekend, in the second round of the tournament, Fiji will host Tonga, and Canada will travel to Sendai, Japan, as all teams strive for a place in the 2027 World Cup.
