British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned U.S. President Donald Trump‘s recent threat to impose tariffs on goods from European allies over their stance on Greenland. Speaking on Monday, Starmer labeled the proposal as “completely wrong” and emphasized that a trade war would benefit no one.

On Saturday, Trump announced a plan to introduce a 10% import tax starting in February on products from eight European countries, including the United Kingdom. This decision follows the nations’ opposition to American control of Greenland, a territory that is part of NATO ally Denmark. Trump’s tariffs appear to be a reaction to the deployment of symbolic troop numbers from these countries to Greenland, which he asserts is crucial for the U.S. missile defense initiative known as the “Golden Dome.” He has expressed concerns that both Russia and China may attempt to assert control over the island.

Starmer reaffirmed Britain’s support for the “fundamental right” of Greenland and Denmark to determine the future of the Arctic territory. During a news conference in London, he noted the importance of the U.K.-U.S. relationship, stating, “We are determined to keep that relationship strong, constructive, and focused on results.”

While Starmer aims to maintain a solid partnership with Trump, he stressed the necessity of acknowledging existing differences. “Being pragmatic does not mean being passive, and partnership does not mean abandoning principles,” he remarked.

In an effort to alleviate tensions, Starmer indicated that the U.K. would collaborate with allies in Europe, NATO, and the United States to keep communication channels open. He clarified that the U.K. is not currently considering retaliatory tariffs in response to Trump’s proposal. “We have not got to that stage. My focus is on making sure we don’t get to that stage,” he said.

This exchange underscores the potential for escalating trade tensions between the United States and its European allies, particularly concerning sensitive geopolitical issues such as Greenland’s status. As negotiations unfold, the impact of these tariff threats on international relations and trade dynamics remains to be seen.
