Saskatchewan Roughriders Eye Back-to-Back Grey Cup in 2026
The Saskatchewan Roughriders are gearing up for a significant challenge as they aim for a back-to-back Grey Cup victory in the 2026 season. The Roughriders, who achieved their first championship in 1966 and have a total of five titles, are looking to build on a strong 2025 season that saw them navigate challenges effectively. The expectations are high, especially with the upcoming 2026 schedule, which was released on December 9, 2025.
One of the most favorable aspects of the upcoming schedule is the addition of an extra home game, resulting from adjustments made for the World Cup. This season, the Roughriders will play their away game against Toronto in Saskatchewan, which allows them to connect with their fan base in the largest city of the province. The team’s exhibition game is also set to be held in Saskatoon, further enhancing access for fans across the region.
The 2026 season kicks off with two exhibition games: on May 18 against Calgary and on May 23 against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The regular season begins on June 13, with the Roughriders hosting the BC Lions at 17:00. The schedule includes several key matchups against divisional rivals, including three games each against the Edmonton Elks and BC Lions, and two games against the Bombers, excluding the exhibition encounter.
As the Roughriders prepare for the season, questions arise regarding their roster and the potential impact of free agency. The increase in the salary cap, anticipated to rise by $200,000 to $300,000, is expected to bring significant changes. With increased revenue, largely due to strong attendance figures, the Roughriders are in a favorable position to retain key players.
One player drawing attention is Trevor Harris, the team’s quarterback, who recently led the Roughriders to a Grey Cup win. At nearly 40 years old, his decision to return for another season reflects his commitment to the team. Harris has shown leadership qualities and a willingness to take less money to allow for team enhancements, mirroring strategies used by other successful players in the league.
Other notable players include Tommy Stevens, who has been secured on a two-year contract, enhancing the team’s options in critical short-yardage situations. The team’s offensive line, bolstered by the return of Jemarcus Hardrick, is expected to provide solid protection and a robust running game.
As the Roughriders look to solidify their roster, they also face challenges with potential departures. Dohnte Meyers is being eyed by NFL teams, which may create a gap in the receiving corps. In contrast, Samuel Emilus, who was instrumental in the Grey Cup victory, could command a salary around $300,000 following the trend of rising player contracts.
The off-season is also marked by developments in the Canadian Football League (CFL) as teams prepare for a competitive landscape. The Toronto Argonauts recently appointed Mike Miller as their head coach, replacing Ryan Dinwiddie, who transitioned to the Ottawa Redblacks. This change comes amid a broader context of organizational restructuring within the Argonauts, which has seen challenges in maintaining competitive performance.
The CFL is also focusing on enhancing fan engagement as viewership patterns evolve. With more fans opting for streaming services, the league is considering its broadcasting strategy as the contract with TSN approaches its conclusion. Stewart Johnson, the CFL Commissioner, has emphasized the importance of adapting to these changes to ensure accessibility for fans.
As the Roughriders gear up for the 2026 season, their goal is clear: to claim a second consecutive Grey Cup title and solidify their status in Canadian football history. With a mix of seasoned veterans and promising new talent, the team is poised for an exciting year ahead, making the upcoming off-season one of the most crucial in recent memory. Fans eagerly anticipate how the team will navigate these dynamics as they aim for glory once again.
