Newark’s Taylor Jeffers Named Athlete of the Week for Stellar Play
In a remarkable display of talent and teamwork, Taylor Jeffers, a junior at Newark High School, has been awarded the title of Athlete of the Week. Her exceptional performance on the volleyball court helped secure victories against both DePue and LaMoille over the past week, contributing significantly to her team’s impressive record of 15-3.
Outstanding Performance on the Court
In the match against DePue, Jeffers recorded 15 assists and five aces, showcasing her skills as a pivotal player. Following this, she achieved nine assists, six aces, and five digs in the game against LaMoille. Her contributions were instrumental in both games, leading her team to crucial victories and earning her the Athlete of the Week title through an online vote.
In an interview with Sports Editor Joshua Welge, Jeffers expressed her pride in the team’s performance. “I am really proud of where my team is at right now and with our 15-3 record. We are a whole new group of girls working together, and I feel like we clicked very quickly,” she said. “The hard work we put into practice and the energy and effort on the court are huge keys to our success. We all have a drive to win each game, which helps us succeed majorly.”
Building Chemistry with Teammates
As a setter, Jeffers plays a crucial role in coordinating the team’s offensive plays. She noted the talent of her younger teammates, saying, “They are some of the most talented hitters that I have played with. They always seem to find a way to put the ball down, even if my set isn’t fully where it should be.” This synergy among players is vital, as it enhances the overall performance of the team.
Jeffers’ journey into volleyball began in fifth grade after she attended a state championship game where Newark’s team triumphed. Inspired by the event, she transitioned from gymnastics to volleyball, a sport she now loves for its fast pace and energetic atmosphere. “I love the amount of energy in the sport and how fast-paced the game is,” she remarked.
Her athletic background includes a long stint in gymnastics, which she practiced for about seven years before briefly playing softball. Ultimately, volleyball became her primary focus, and she has been dedicated to the sport ever since.
Celebrating Success and Future Aspirations
Following a significant win, Jeffers has a favorite spot to celebrate: Texas Roadhouse. “I would just eat a bunch of baskets of bread and butter,” she joked. In addition to volleyball, she enjoys watching shows like “Dance Moms” and dreams of visiting the Maldives Islands someday, captivated by its beauty despite the long flight.
Academically, Jeffers excels in her studies, particularly enjoying AP precalc and psychology. Her well-rounded interests reflect her dedication both on and off the court, positioning her as a promising athlete and student.
As Newark High School continues its season, Jeffers remains a key player to watch, embodying the spirit of teamwork and excellence that characterizes successful sports programs. With her strong leadership and talent, she is poised to make a significant impact in the games ahead.
