BC Hydro has inaugurated a new electric vehicle (EV) charging hub at Victoria’s Ogden Point, significantly enhancing the EV infrastructure on Vancouver Island. The facility, situated in the parking lot of the Ogden Point cruise ship terminal at 185 Dallas Rd., features a total of 12 charging ports, including two high-capacity 180-kilowatt chargers. These powerful chargers can provide up to 180 kilometers of driving range to an average electric vehicle in approximately 10 minutes.

According to Adrian Dix, the Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions, this project aligns with the province’s commitment to making cleaner transportation options both accessible and affordable. Dix stated, “With more than 800 BC Hydro charging ports now available in communities throughout B.C., we are building a public charging network that’s ready to meet the growing demand for electric vehicles and will support economic growth in our province.”

Enhanced Features and Local Impact

The new hub not only provides fast charging options but also incorporates dual charging capabilities, allowing two vehicles to utilize the same charger simultaneously. In addition to the two high-speed chargers, the hub includes eight Level 2 chargers, which cater to drivers based on their duration of stay, enhancing convenience for both local residents and visitors.

Grace Lore, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Victoria-Beacon Hill, emphasized the importance of the new hub for the local community. She remarked, “Victoria’s new hub at Ogden Point expands the city’s charging capacity and strengthens Vancouver Island’s role in B.C.’s EV charging network. These 12 new charging ports will support families, commuters, and visitors who want affordable, reliable, zero-emission transportation options on Vancouver Island.”

BC Hydro already operates another EV fast-charging site in Victoria, located at 1425 Store Street, which houses two additional chargers. With the opening of the Ogden Point hub, the total number of charging ports in Victoria now stands at 14, further solidifying the region’s commitment to sustainable transportation.

This initiative reflects a broader trend towards the expansion of EV infrastructure across British Columbia, as the province continues to promote cleaner transportation alternatives in response to growing demand. The new charging hub at Ogden Point not only serves the immediate needs of the community but also positions Vancouver Island as a key player in the transition to a greener future.
